Flanagan set for 'Pool return

Full-back set for bench spot

Jon Flanagan is set to be named in Liverpool's match-day squad on Wednesday, having not played first-team football for the Reds since the end of the 2013-14 season.

Jon Flanagan is set to be named in Liverpool's match-day squad on Wednesday, having not played first-team football for the Reds since the end of the 2013-14 season.

Flanagan was a regular in the 'Pool line-up as Brendan Rodgers and his troops went agonisingly close to securing the Premier League title two seasons ago, eventually being pipped by Manchester City.

The 23-year-old full-back has been plagued by knee problems ever since but, having returned to full training last month, the England international is set to at least sit amongst the Liverpool substitutes as Jurgen Klopp's men host Exeter City in an FA Cup replay on Wednesday evening.

“Jon is in a really good way," said manager Klopp. "We’re really happy about this.

“The medical department decided that he’s not for the starting line-up but, if nothing happens, he’s on the bench.

“It’s a long time for him and it’s the first step back for him, being back in the dressing room and not in a suit - but in a tracksuit."

However, Daniel Sturridge will take no part in the Reds' clash against the League Two outfit at Anfield.

“(There's) no chance for Daniel," said Klopp of Sturridge, who earlier this month suffered a setback to his recovery from a hamstring injury.

“He has had a break in training because of some issues. He’s now back training but losing time.

"I don’t know how long it is. That’s not a situation we can think about.”
