Smalling injury to be assessed

Chris Smalling will undergo a scan on Wednesday to determine the extent of the groin injury he suffered during the 3-2 defeat against Wolfsburg.

Smalling went down with the problem in the 77th minute of the game at the Volkswagen Arena but continued on as United were trailing 2-1 at the time.

He struggled on for the remainder of the game but he was limited in his movement and he will undergo a scan on Wednesday to assess the damage.

Earlier Matteo Darmian was forced off with a hamstring injury to leave manager Louis van Gaal with only a handful of defenders available for the weekend's trip to Bournemouth.

Meanwhile, Marcos Rojo has undergone surgery on the shoulder injury that is set to rule him out for several weeks.

The defender dislocated his shoulder in training last week and he took to Instagram to thank fans for their support.

Posting a picture of him in his hospital bed, Rojo wrote: "My operation was a success. Thank you to my beautiful wife, always with me. Thank you everyone for your messages of love and support.
