Manchester City have confirmed that striker Sergio Aguero "sustained injuries" in a car crash in Amsterdam on Thursday night.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola confirmed on Friday that the Argentine has been ruled out of City's Premier League match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, which will be shown live on BT Sport 1 on the eir Sport pack [Kick-off 5.30pm]
The 29-year-old, who was in Amsterdam to watch a concert by the Colombian pop star Maluma, is thought to have suffered a fractured rib in the accident.
"I will speak to him today, but the first impression is he has broken his rib," City manager Pep Guardiola said.
The Spaniard says he has no problems with Aguero being in the Netherlands just two days before an important Premier League match.
"Day off is to be happy. I am a trainer who doesn't want to train every day because they need to rest, mentally and physically," he continued.
"I was busy this morning preparing training and I'll speak to him this afternoon. We were worried about what happened.
"He cannot play tomorrow and maybe he won't go to the international break [for Argentina's World Cup qualifiers against Peru on 5 October and Paraguay on 11 October]. Exactly how many days he’ll be off I don’t know.
"He's OK. What matters now is he's healthy. It doesn't matter if he can play or not, just that he's OK."
Aguero was a passenger in a Crysler PT Cruiser taxi which was driving him back to the airport, but veered off the road and slammed into a light pole in the De Boelelaan area of the city.
"The taxi driver did not see the curve and skid. And when he skidded, we hit him the pole," Aguero told Radio Metro de Argentina.
"I broke my rib, now I'm resting. It hurts me badly. I'll be discharged in a little while."
Aguero has scored six goals in seven appearances for Manchester City this season, and tops the Premier League Golden Boot charts with Manchester United's Romelu Lukaku and Chelsea's Alvaro Morata.
Manchester City also received confirmation on Thursday that £49.5m defender Benjamin Mendy has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament, and is likely to be out for around nine months.
