Airlie Beach extends winning run with Fairyhouse victory

Airlie Beach saw of all comers to claim the Bar One Racing Royal Bond Novice Hurdle at Fairyhouse and in doing so maintain her unbeaten record.

The six-year-old was the clear winner on the course, beating off competition from Ruby Walsh on Penhill and Paul Townsend on Saturnas.

Le Martalin set the early challenge before being shaken off and Peace News was mustering a late challenge before coming down and throwing Bryan Cooper to the ground. The spill also disturbed Forge Meadow and Penhill aiding Airlie Beach’s march to glory.

The win extends her winning record to seven from seven with a six-and-a-half length win in the finish clear of Saturnas and Le Martalin.

Winning rider, Danny Mullins, said: "I spoke to my agent Ken Whelan last night and I told him I was a little bit confident this one would run well.

"It worked out well. The winning of it was probably being able to get a breather before the third-last.

"Once I took the second-last well I knew I wouldn't stop and it would take a very good one to beat me.

"Sean Flanagan (Le Martalin) took me on early, but both of us knew we couldn't keep that up so we steadied and quickened again."
