Allertova hails rising Konta

Briton through to last 16

Britain's Johanna Konta is through to the fourth round of the Australian Open thanks to an impressive victory over Denisa Allertova.

Konta secured a 6-2 6-2 win at Melbourne Park to advance to a meeting with 21st seed Ekaterina Makarova in the tournament's last 16.

"It was not easy out there," said the unseeded Sydney-born player. "She's an incredibly tough opponent.

"I knew that I had to run down each ball and fight for every point. It definitely wasn't easy."

Allertova, who struggled with a leg injury for much of the encounter, praised her conqueror.

"I hurt my left leg in the opening round, it got worse in the second, and today it was just not me on the court. It was hard to play every point the way I wanted," the Czech competitor said.

"I am tired and sad, because without this injury, I thought I had a chance, but Jo was ruthless with me.

"She played well on every point. She is going up and up, and she is such a good player."

In the men's draw, Andy Murray secured a 6-2 3-6 6-2 6-2 victory over Portugal's Joao Sousa to reach the last 16.

Sousa threatened to derail the Scot's progress on several occasions but Murray held firm on crucial points to reach his 20th successive Grand Slam fourth round.

Murray's father-in-law, Nigel Sears, had been taken to hospital after collapsing at the Rod Laver Arena, but the Olmypic champion's brother, Jamie, revealed afterwards that Sears was "conscious, talking and sitting up" whilst undergoing tests with a cardiologist.
