Alonso aims for China return

Fernando Alonso is working on his fitness in the hope of being cleared to race at the Chinese Grand Prix.

The McLaren driver fractured ribs when his car slammed into a wall at turn three before barrel-rolling through the air during the season-opener in Australia and was declared 'medically unfit' to race in the Bahrain Grand Prix.

He will have to undergo strenuous tests ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix but he is training hard in a bid to return to the cockpit in Shanghai.

"Return to the training. In the next few days I hope to do also cycling and swim. Step by step," Alonso wrote alongside an image of him training on Instagram.

McLaren racing director Eric Boullier is confident the Spaniard will be given the green light to race in China.

"Yeah, I think so," Boullier said when asked if Alonso will be ready. "He is going to go again for some scans and then the FIA will inspect them and decide yes or no."
