Arsenal outclass sloppy Chelsea

Three first-half goals proved enough for Arsenal as they overcame Chelsea for the first time since 2011, winning 3-0 at the Emirates.

Goals from Alexis Sanchez, Theo Walcott and Mesut Özil helped the hosts ease past a lacklustre Chelsea ,which seen the Pensioners register only one shot on target in the later stages.

Arsenal’s pressing early on caused problems for Chelsea who seemed unable to cope with the home team’s slick passing and interchanging movements off the ball.

Antonio Conte would have been livid with his sides defensive performance after questionable performances from Gary Cahill and new signing David Luiz.

Despite going six games without scoring against their London rivals, Arsène Wenger’s side broke the deadlock in the 11th minute when Sanchez nipped the ball from Gary Cahill and lifted the ball over Thibaut Courtois to score his 47th goal on his 100th appearance for the Gunners.

Eden Hazard will no doubt prove a pivotal player for Chelsea throughout the season, but the Belgian’s lapse in concentration two minutes after conceding allowed Héctor Bellerín in behind the Visitor’s backline before the right-back crossed to unmarked Walcott who slotted home from close-range.

Just as it looked Conte’s side were gaining a foothold, be it 2-0 behind, Arsenal hit them on the break and they sealed their classy first-half performance when Sanchez found Ozil at the back-post and the German smashed his effort off the post and in.

The former Juventus coach rejigged his side in the 54th minute after he replaced former Gunner Cesc Fabregas with Marcos Alonso and the former Bolton defender was nearly caught out in the 67th minute after Walcott was played in by Alex Iwobi before seeing his shot clawed away by Courtois.

Chelsea’s only real opportunity arrived in the 84th minute after substitution Michy Batshuayi was played in on goal but was unable to repeat Sanchez’s lobbed goal after Petr Cech did well to stand tall and deflect the ball away.

Arsenal go third, five points off leaders Manchester City and will face Burnley on the 2nd of October while Chelsea drop to 8th, they will look to get their Premier League campaign back on track when they face struggling Hull City on the 1st.
