Austin Gleeson free to play All-Ireland final

Waterford's Austin Gleeson has escaped a ban for pulling off an opponent's faceguard and will be available for the All-Ireland final against Galway on 3 September.

Gleeson appeared to to pull the helmet off Luke Meade during Sunday's 11-point All-Ireland SHC semi-final victory over Cork, and the Deise feared the Mount Sion clubman would be served with a retrospective ban.

Gleeson inter-county team-mate, Tadhg de Burca was suspended for Sunday's All-Ireland SFC 4-19 to 0-20 semi-final win over Cork after being sent off against Wexford in the All-Ireland SHC quarter-final for attempting to pull off Harry Kehoe's helmet.

The Central Competitions Control Committee [CCCC] sought clarification from referee James Owens over the incident on Tuesday, with the match official stating that he was satisfied with the way he dealt with the situation.

Owens' statement to the CCCC means the case is closed and no suspensions can be issued.

Gleeson's team-mate Philip O'Mahony says Owens made the correct call, and supported the decision not to refer the incident to the CCCC.

"It happened right beside me and the referee, I'm fairly sure, told Luke Meade to put back on his straps," the Ballygunner left half-back said.

"Some of the lads might say it looks worse slowed down, but I was right beside it and there was nothing in it.

"Because there was so much controversy over Adrian Tuohy and obviously Tadhg, I remember at the time the helmet came off I was worried for a second, but I was right on the scene and there was nothing in it.

"It's a contact sport, these things are going to happen. If they start pulling up every time a helmet comes off, I think there’s going to be a lot of hassle over it.

"I'm sure, if you look at every game up and down the country, whether it be club or county, helmets come off. You see the hitting in it. I wouldn't be worried about it.”
