Arturo Vidal, Bayern Munich's combative central midfielder, is to undergo knee surgery, meaning he could miss the German sides's next three ties.
The Chile international will go under the knife for what is believed to be a small operation, news that was confirmed by manager Jupp Heynckes today.
Vidal felt a pain in his right knee while training on Sunday and was immediately sent for exploratory tests, which found "a loose body" located within the joint, which requires surgery in order to remove it.
"Arturo had a trip without any contact from anyone else," Heynckes told a news conference. "He has a loose body in the knee joint. He needs a small procedure and will be out for the time being.
"He's a fighter. I'm confident for his recovery."
The midfielder seems certain to miss both Bayern's DFB-Pokal semi-final clash with Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday and also their Bundesliga clash with Hannover on Saturday; however, the supposedly relatively minor nature of the surgery means that Vidal could return to fitness in time to face Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-finals on Wednesday week.
Bayern also have another fresh injury concern in the form of France international Corentin Tolisso, who suffered bruising in Bayern's 5-1 win over Borussia Monchengladbach.
"Coco picked up another knock against Gladbach and has some bruising. It's not yet clear if he'll make tomorrow's squad," added Heynckes.
Bayern Munich's Champions League semi-final first leg against Real Madrid at Allianz Arena on Wednesday, April 25 will be shown live on BT Sport on the eir Sport pack [kick off 7.45pm].
