Bayern Munich have admitted they were "surprised" by Philipp Lahm's decision to announce his retirement.
The 33-year-old made public his decision on Tuesday that he will hang up his boots at the end of the current campaign despite having a contract with the German champions until 2019.
Shortly before the club captain releasing his statement, Bayern president stated he was unaware of what Lahm was set to say, adding that any potential retirement would be jointly announced with the club.
After the news that the highly-decorated right-back was quitting football for good, Bayern chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenige admitted Lahm's actions took the club by surprise.
"Bayern Munich are surprised by the actions of Philipp Lahm and his advisor," he said.
"Until yesterday we were expecting to issue a joint statement from Philipp Lahm and Bayern Munich. Uli Hoeness and myself had honest, intensive talks in the past months with Philipp about a potential involvement in the management of our club.
"Last week he informed us he was currently not available for the sports director position and that he wants to end his contract early."
Lahm enjoyed a hugely successful time at the Allianz Arena, winning seven Bundesliga titles, six German Cups, the Champions League, while he also captained Germany to the their fourth World Cup triumph in Brazil in 2014.
