Rafael Benitez is keen to carry on as Newcastle manager for 'five or ten years' but has warned the squad must improve if he is to remain at St James' Park.
Benitez was appointed Newcastle manager in March 2016 but he was unable to prevent the club from being relegated to the Championship. He agreed to stay on and guided them to the Championship title at the first time of asking before securing a tenth-place finish in the Premier League last season.
The former Liverpool and Real Madrid manager has held talks with owner Mike Ashley and managing director Lee Charnley about a new contract but, while he is keen to stay, he wants to know the club is moving in the right direction.
"We spoke about the future and the possibilities, that’s it," Benitez is quoted as saying by Chronicle Live. “I said that we have to see how things are going and then we can sit down later on and discuss that.
“I’d like to stay here for five years or 10 years if it’s possible because I can see the potential, the fans and the city. Everybody (needs to be) pushing in the right direction.
“But we have to do things like I imagine has to be done in a football club.”
