West Brom manager Tony Pulis believes Saido Berahino's poor form is down to the constant speculation about his future.
Tottenham made several attempts to sign the striker during the summer transfer window, including two bids on deadline day in September, while he also saw his transfer request turned down.
He threatened never to play for the club again but following talks with Pulis he returned to the first team and has scored three goals in 11 appearances for the Baggies this season.
However, his form is not what it was and Pulis admits the player must improve.
"For six months we have had Saido not playing anywhere near as good as he was before," Pulis explained.
"I’m not blaming Saido. It’s not his fault. He’s an outstanding player and an outstanding talent but we haven’t had him at the same level as before all this happened.
"I’m not saying we can’t get him back, but he’s not back to the same level.
"The problem is the window is coming around again and all the speculation will start again.
"Until the lad recognises that he’s got to wash a lot of this stuff away it’s not going to go away.
"He needs to get back – for his own sake. For the last six months he hasn’t realised his unbelievable potential."
