Steve Bruce has admitted he has had discussions with the new owners of Aston Villa about replacing the sacked Roberto di Matteo as manager of the club.
The Villans removed the Italian after just 12 games in charge, their poor start to the season seeing them languish in 19th place in the Championship.
Having spent six years in charge of cross-city rivals Birmingham City, were Bruce to be appointed at Villa Park he would follow Alex McLeish in managing both of the second city's biggest clubs.
But while Bruce admits he has spoken to Villa's owners, he is just hopeful of landing the job.
“I’ve had a chat with them. That’s as far as it’s gone,” he told Sky Sports.
“They did say they’re in a process, which you have to respect. I’m hoping that I hear something this week. It would be a terrific job.
“I’m sure everybody would agree that it’s one of the big clubs of this country.
“It needs a little bit of turning round at the moment, but they’ve got a huge support and it’s a big, big club. Let’s hope I hear something.”
Caretaker manager Steve Clarke is also believed to be in the running to be made permanent manager after impressing the owners with how the players have responded to his elevation to the manager's role.
