Cancellation sees Benetton into Rainbow Cup final

PRO14 Rugby has this morning confirmed the cancellation of Saturday's scheduled Ospreys v Benetton clash due to a COVID-19 outbreak meaning that the Italian outfit have automatically qualified for the final on June 19th.

It was flagged earlier this week that a number of Ospreys players had tested positive for the virus which put the game in doubt.

PRO14 Rugby confirmed the cancellation this morning and awarded four points to Benetton which is enough to see them through to the final on Saturday week (LIVE on eir sport 1 from 5pm)

Benetton will have home advantage against the winner of the South African conference as the game is set for the Stadio di Monigo in Treviso.

The winner of the South African conference will be decided by the meeting of Sharks v Bulls this Saturday (LIVE on eir sport 1 from 5.10pm).

The news will come as a bitter blow to both Munster and Glasgow who harboured their own hopes of reaching the final.

A statement from PRO14 Rugby said the decision to cancel the game “is a result of the mandate from Public Health Wales that all individuals who were part of the travelling party from the previous fixture are now required to self-isolate in-line with public health protocols.”

“With no available weekends remaining, the game will not be rescheduled," the statement continued.

"As a result, PRO14 Rugby will use the protocol decided prior to the 2020/21 season whereby a game that could not be rescheduled would result in that fixture deemed a 0-0 draw, but four match points would be awarded to the team who had not been the cause of the postponement."
