Canning leads Galway to Leinster final

All-Ireland champions Galway are through to the Leinster SHC final with a game to spare after a 1-23 to 0-17 win over Wexford at Wexford Park.

Joe Canning scored 12 points, including a couple of stunning sideline cuts, as Micheal Donoghue's side avenged their 1-23 to 0-23 Allianz League quarter-final defeat to the Model County in March.

But the 29-year-old limped off with a knee injury just before full-time to take the gloss off an almost perfect afternoon for the Liam MacCarthy Cup holders.

The only goal of the game came after just two minutes, when Conor Whelan swept home the rebound from the angle after Wexford goalkeeper Mark fanning had brilliantly save Cathal Mannion's initial shot.

Davy Fitzgerald's side, noticeably struggling in the latter stages of their third match in 14 days, now take on Kilkenny next Saturday at Nowlam Park in round five, with the winner of that match meeting Galway in the Leinster final at Croke Park on 1 July.

Both sides came into the third match of the round-robin series with maximum points, with Wexford leading Galway on points difference.

Wexford beat Dublin and Offaly in the opening two rounds, while Galway beat Kilkenny and Offaly.
