Canning "on the mend", says Donoghue

Galway hurling boss Micheal Donoghue says Hurler of the Year Joe Canning is "on the mend" following minor knee surgery.

Canning and Galway skipper David Burke were both rested for Sunday's AIG Fenway Classic in Boston, an 11-a-side exhibition tournament at the city's iconic Fenway Park stadium.

But Donoghue says the pair are likely to be fit for the defence of their National League title, which begins against Antrim at Pearse Stadium on 28 January.

"Joe had minor keyhole surgery a few weeks ago, so he's on the mend from that," Donoghue told the Irish Examiner after Galway's 50-33 final defeat to Clare.

"David is also carrying a small knock. It was just more precautionary than anything. We felt it wasn't worth it.

"They'll be back [for the National League campaign], please God."

Following the end of the NHL campiagn in April, Galway will meet Wexford, Kilkenny, Offaly and Dublin in the new Leinster SHC championship, with two home and two away matches in a round-robin format.

Donoghue's side begin the defence of their All-Ireland crown against Offaly at O'Connor Park, Tullamore on 12 May.

The top team in the group will go into the provincial final, with the winner of that game heading directly to the All-Ireland semi-final.
