Carabao Cup round-up: Man Utd cruise to win

Holders Manchester United cruised to a 4-1 victory over Burton in the Carabao Cup third round.

Championship side Burton never looked capable of springing a shock with manager Nigel Clough making nine changes from the weekend and leaving many of the experienced players on the bench.

The Red Devils also made nine changes but with their strength in depth this contest was never in doubt.

England striker Marcus Rashford proved to be their destroyer with two early goals to take his tally to six for the season for club and country.

There was just five minutes on the clock when Michael Carrick, making his first start of the season, picked out Jesse Lingard and when his effort was blocked, Rashford was on hand to calmy slot home.

Burton simply couldn't handle the pace and power of the home side and Rashford doubled his tally 12 minutes later finding space on the edge of the box before unleashing a fierce drive that went in off the post.

Burton rallied but after Joe Mason squandered a great chance to cut the arrears, the home side got a third before the break when Jesse Lingaad's shot took a wicked deflection off Ben Turner and crept into the net.

Rashford was substituted before he got the chance to grab his first hat-trick but his final act was to set up Anthony Martial to race clear and grab a fourth.

The visitors claimed a consolation when young Portuguese goalkeeper came off the bench but juggled a routine cross and Lloyd Dyer poked home.

Michy Batshuayi scored a hat-trick as Chelsea put Championship side Nottingham Forest to the sword with a 5-1 victory at Stamford Bridge.

It took Chelsea just 13 minutes to get their noses in front when Kenedy volleyed home from close range after pouncing on a Antonio Rudiger cross.

Batshuayi opened his account to double Chelsea's lead when he fired through Stephen Henderson's legs before Charly Musonda made their progress to the fourth round assured with a third from a tight angle before the break.

Eden Hazard, making his first appearance of the season, hit the woodwork, but the Belgian was at his mesmeric best to outwit the visitors' defence before setting up Batshuayi for his second.

Batshuayi claimed his hat-trick with some good fortune when Kenedy's shot cannoned off the bar and hit the Belgian on the chest before crossing the line.

Sadio Mane scored twice as Manchester City bat fellow Premier League rivals West Brom 2-1 at the Hawthorns.

Manchester City gave YaYa Toure his first outing of the season as midfielder Ilkay Gundogan returned from a long-term knee ligament injury.

Gundogan almost celebrated his inclusion with a goal after just three minutes but after his effort was blocked by Ben Foster fellow German Leroy Sane followed up to poke home for his third goal of the season.

Claudio Yacob gave the home side hope an equaliser after the break but Sane popped up to grab the winner with 13 minutes remaining.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin grabbed a double as Everton comfortably beat Championship Sunderland 3-0 at Goodison Park.

The Toffees had endured over seven hours without a goal before Calvert-Lewin gave them the lead and then added a second after being set up by Sandro.

Calvert-Lewin came within a whisker of a hat-trick but struck a post before Ourmar Niasse sealed a fouth-round place late on.

Arsenal made hard work of reaching the fourth round with a narrow 1-0 victory over League One outfit Doncaster at the Emirates.

A first-half strike from Theo Walcott promised to open the floodgates after a clever finish from an Alexis Sanchez cross, but the Gunners laboured to kill off the tie.

Doncaster came close to taking the match into extra-time when Matty Blair hit the bar.
