Leinster fly-half Joey Carbery has returned to training following ankle surgery and says he hopes to feature in the latter stages of Ireland's Six Nations campaign.
The 21-year-old, who underwent an operation in December after injuring his ankle in Leinster's win at Northampton, is likely to be fit for the Pro12 clash against Treviso on 12 February.
If he comes through the match in Italy unscathed, and the home tie against Edinburgh five days later, he is likely to feature in Joe Schmidt's squad for the match against France in Dublin on 25 February.
Schmidt named just two out-halves, Paddy Jackson and Johnny Sexton, in his 40-man squad for the opening Six Nations games against Scotland on 4 February and Italy a week later.
"I'm nearly back," Carbery told the Irish Independent.
"I'm back running and the strength has come back a lot. They've done a lot of tests comparing the two ankles and it's pretty much the same, so it's kind of working back into the team and getting the skills back.
"Hopefully when I get back fit and running, playing games, I might be involved but all I can do is concentrate on a big few weeks for Leinster coming up and see where that brings me.
"I'm fully back training next week, so I'll hopefully be involved in the Treviso game away and so hopefully we'll get the ball rolling from there."
