Sunderland captain Lee Cattermole has been ruled out for four months.
Cattermole has made just three appearances for the Black Cats this season as he has struggled with a long-standing hip problem and he underwent surgery to repair a torn cartilage last Monday.
His recovery will see him miss the next four months which will come as a huge blow for Sunderland as they look to move away from the relegation zone.
"CONFIRMED: Lee Cattermole has undergone hip surgery in the US due to torn cartilage and will be out for a minimum of 4 months. #SAFC," the club tweeted on Friday.
Speaking at his press conference ahead of Saturday's game against Hull City, manager David Moyes added: "Lee had an operation in America. He is still out there just now but will be coming back in the next day or two."
The defeat of Bournemouth was Sunderland's first win of the season and Moyes is hopeful they can build on the performance when they host Hull at the Stadium of Light.
"We've had a good couple of weeks and it felt good to win again. We've had great support and we want to keep winning," Moyes added.
"I'm hoping we've put all the injuries behind us. The players are in good spirits and we want to do it again.
"We need to give the supporters something to shout about and we haven't done enough of that this year. Hopefully we can tomorrow."
