Andy Cole has likened the current Liverpool team to Kevin Keegan's Newcastle United team of the 1990s which almost won the Premier League.
The striker scored freely for the Magpies as they were promoted to the top flight before taking it by storm and then moved to Manchester United for a British record transfer fee in January 1995.
While Keegan's side came close to winning the title in the 1995/86 season before being overhauled by Utd, they are fondly remembered for their attacking style of play and Cole sees similarities with Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp.
“What I do like about Liverpool? I love what they have going forward,” he wrote in the Daily Mirror.
“I think, attacking-wise they’re sexy. The goals can come from all over the park. That’s what I like.
“Klopp bringing in Sadio Mane, I’ve mentioned Daniel Sturridge numerous times and I think he’s England’s best centre-forward.
“When you’ve got players like that, you’re going to score goals and you’re going to create goals.
“But I look at the other side of them and see the other side – it’s a bit like Newcastle, when I was there with Kevin Keegan.
“It’s the entertainer kind of scenario. I really do enjoy watching them going forward, but defensively they’re so-so. But they’re a good team. I think that’s what makes them exciting.
“Are they a title threat? Yes, I think they are, because Klopp has got them playing with so much energy now.
“They play good football and he’s got them working very hard for each other. They’re one of five teams who can win it, definitely.”
