Ireland captain Seamus Coleman sustained a stress fracture in the foot ahead of Tuesday's international friendly against Poland, according to national team manager Martin O'Neill.
Coleman played the full 90 minutes of the 4-1 Nations League defeat to Cardiff in Wales on 6 September, but missed Tuesday's 1-1 draw with Poland on Tuesday with the injury.
Ireland face Denmark at the Aviva Stadium in the Nations League on 13 October, and host Wales three days later, and O'Neill says the Everton defender is an injury doubt for the two games in Dublin.
"Seamus went for a scan, he has a little stress fracture, which is a concern," O'Neill confirmed.
"Seamus could easily have got a flight home, but he stayed with the team.
"He is a great captain, a really great captain. He is inspirational and obviously we hope he is back in time for the games coming up."
Debutant Aiden O'Brien headed Ireland into the lead against Poland in Wroclaw, from a superb Callum O'Dowda cross, but Leeds United's Mateusz Klich levelled for Poland with three minutes remaining at the Stadion Miejski.
"I thought there was some superb performances out there, notably young O'Dowda, but I have to say, on his debut, O'Brien did brilliantly for us," O'Neill continued.
"I have seen a lot of him over the last couple of year and the one thing you will get from him is that old word, the shift.
"And today he tried to get hold of it, hold play up, giving us a little breather at times.
"He is brave and did exceptionally well today. I'm really pleased with him and I think he is pretty pleased as well."
