Coneygree on course for Punchestown

Coneygree is making steady progress in his recovery from injury and could run in the Punchestown Gold Cup at the end of April.

The 2015 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner was ruled out of the 32Red King George VI Chase at Kempton last month after failing to sparkle in a pre-race workout and was subsequently found to be jarred up.

Connections had hoped he would be fit to take his place in the March 17 field but they opted to swerve the blue riband for the second successive year.

With his recovery going to plan, Sara Bradstock, wife and assistant to trainer Mark Bradstock, has raised the possibility of having him back before the end of the season.

"He's still very much on target for Punchestown and we also hope to get a prep run in with him," Bradstock said.

"Aintree is the most obvious one, but whether he'll be quite ready, I don't know.

"He's sound now - the vets have been in and have been very happy with - but it's just a question of making absolutely sure that everything is perfect.

"Nicky Henderson has kindly allowed us to use his water treadmill, so he'll be doing that and swimming before we canter him in about a month.

"The prognosis is 100 per cent positive and he will be back."
