Covington in Bisping dispute after UFC title win

Having claimed the biggest victory of his career in defeating Rafael dos Anjos to claim the UFC welterweight interim title, Colby Covington proceeded to enter a war of words with former middleweight champion Michael Bisping.

Covington defeated Dos Anjos at UFC 225 and then called out title holder Tyron Woodley in his post-fight TV interview.

Dominant rounds in the second, third and fifth, saw Covington overpower Dos Anjos, although the Brazilian showed strongly in the fourth, when he bullied the American around the cage, a pace he couldn't maintain in the close.

It was Covington's clash with the Fox TV panel that grabbed the headlines; however, when he laid into the panellists, suggesting they didn't rate or expect the US fighter to get the job done.

"All my haters in one studio - I appreciate it, guys. What kind of excuses are you going to make for RDA now? What, you gonna say he's a lightweight? He's overweight? This and that. We know you're gonna make excuses; no one's ever gonna legitimise me," said Covington.

Bisping's retort from studio being, "No one's making excuses, Colby. You fought a good fight. 

"Why are you so defensive? Why you gotta be a p****?

"That makes it even better for you, we said it was a great opponent, we just said - I don't know if you cared to listen, I know you just had a fight, you've been hit in the head a few times, but obviously you're not thinking too straight. We just said you fought a very, very good fight. If you cared to listen, open your ears and stop talking so much c***, for one minute, you might hear that we actually gave you some compliments."

Covington proceeded to attempt to call Bisping out of retirement after another exchange, before the Briton ended the interchange, saying: "Do you have the invite to go to the White House? Or is that just another figment of your imagination like being the champ?"

Robert Whittaker also defeated Yoel Romero in what was the main event of the night, and meant to be a middleweight title fight, only for that belt not to be on the line due to Romero missing weight. The fight when it did transpire was an electric one; however, with Whittaker coming through some heavy damage to see off Romero again - the same man he won the belt against in July 2017.

"He hits like a truck," Whittaker said after the fight. "Man, he packs some power, I'll tell you that much. I hit him a lot. I thought I controlled three of the five rounds, but he did drop me. It was tough," Whittaker said after the bout, which won the Fight of the Night award.

The decision was a split one, with Romero - bucking the general trend of the UFC - giving a humble retort to the judges' decision.

"It's my humble opinion that I did not lose tonight," said Romero.
