Cronin close to Leinster return

Sean Cronin could return to the Leinster match-day squad for Saturday's Guinness PRO12 clash with Cardiff Blues.

Cronin missed Ireland's entire RBS Six Nations campaign due to the Grade Two hamstring tear he suffered in Leinster's defeat of Zebre in early January, but he is closing in on a return to fitness.

He took part in some scrummaging sessions last week and he will be assessed in the coming days to determine his availability for the visit of Cardiff.

Captain Isa Nacewa (knee) and Josh van der Flier (shoulder) are also closing in on a return to action.

“Sean trained last week, as did Josh. they’re on the field running, but didn’t take a lot of contact,” Leinster scrum coach John Fogarty said. "Sean did a bit of scrummaging on Friday. So we’re hopeful that Sean, like Isa, can get through the week physically.”

Leinster's international contingent has returned to the province following the RBS Six Nations but they will not play any part in this weekend's games.

Rob Kearney missed Saturday's win over England due to a knee injury, while Jamie Heaslip withdrew from the starting XV shortly before kick-off after complaining of a lower back problem.

Both players will see specialists this week in the hope of being available for the European Champions Cup quarter-final against Wasps on Saturday week.

The BoxNation Channel is now part of the eir Sport pack on satellite , eir vision and the eir Sport App.
