Ilkay Gundogan will be sidelined for a 'long time' after he damaged his anterior cruciate knee ligament in Manchester City's win over Watford in midweek.
Gundogan attempted to play on following a clash with Nordin Amrabat, but was forced to leave the field of play, being replaced by Fernando just before the interval.
Manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed the Germany international will undergo surgery and will be out for a considerable period as he recovers from the injury.
"He will be out for a long time. It's so so difficult for him, it's sad for him, we're going to miss him a lot, it's unlucky, but that's football," Guardiola told reporters on Friday.
"Now we need him to feel we are there and wait and come back safe. He's going to be operated [upon] and be back as soon as possible."
Guardiola has refused to give a firm diagnosis on the injury but revealed a statement would be issued in the near future.
"We should wait for a statement. The doctors are the right people to tell you what it is," he added.
Gundogan has made 16 appearances, scoring five goals, since joining City in a £20million deal from Borussia Dortmund in the summer.
