Hull will be without captain Michael Dawson for the first three months of the new season.
Dawson limped off after 28 minutes of Hull's 1-0 pre-season win at Mansfield Town on Tuesday night with tests confirming he had damaged his medical knee ligaments.
"Scans have revealed that Michael Dawson has sustained significant damage to the medial collateral ligament in his knee," the club's statement on Twitter read.
"The injury, suffered in last night's friendly win at Mansfield Town, is likely to keep the centre-back out of action for three months."
Dawson's injury has done little to ease the club's defensive problems ahead of the new season with Moses Odubajo and Alex Bruce facing lengthy spells on the sidelines, while goalkeeper Allan McGregor is not expected to play until the New Year.
