David De Gea believes Jose Mourinho is the right man to lead Manchester United back to the top of the Premier League.
United have struggled since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in May 2013 with Louis Van Gaal paying the price for a disappointing season which ended with the club finishing fifth in the Premier League.
Van Gaal was sacked less than 48 hours after guiding the club to the FA Cup and United wasted little time in appointing Mourinho as his successor.
The former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss has enjoyed success wherever he has managed and De Gea admits United have missed having a manager like Mourinho.
"I came to United to win trophies. It is true these last two years we have not been at the level the club deserves," De Gea told Cadena Ser.
"We hope that Mourinho, with his will to win, will make sure United to return to the top.
"I have not spoken with Mourinho and not asked team-mates about him. I think we already know him.
"At United we've missed a manager like Mourinho. With the personality and mindset of a winner. Getting him was right."
De Gea came close to leaving Old Trafford last season only for his proposed move to Real Madrid to stall on deadline day due to an issue with the paperwork.
He has since signed a four-year extension to his United contract but rumours linking him with a move to the Bernabeu continue to circulate.
The 25-year-old, however, insists he is unaware of Real's interest in him and has made it clear he is 'very happy' at United.
"I know nothing about Madrid wanting to sign me. I'm calm. I have three more years in Manchester," De Gea added. "United have given me everything. Now I'm just concentrating on the Euros and to be with the national team.
"I'm at a big club, which gives me love every day.
"I'm very grateful for Manchester United and I'm very happy there."
