Del Potro crashes out of Wimbledon


Latvia's Ernests Gulbis beat former US Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro in straight sets to progress to the third round at Wimbledon.

The world number 589 beat the Argentine 6-4 6-4 7-6 [7-3] to set up a third-round meeting with three-time champion Novak Djokovic.

The Serb eased to a 6-2 6-2 6-1 victory over Czechia's Adam Pavlasek in just over 90 minutes on Court One.

Gulbis, 28, was a top-10 player as recently as 2014, the year he made the French Open semi-finals, but didn't win a match for 13 months before his first-round victory over Dominican Victor Estrella.

29th seed Del Potro, a Wimbledon semi-finalist in 2013, seemed to struggling with a wrist injury throughout the match.

France's Gael Monfils beat British number two Kyle Edmund 7-6 [7-1] 6-4 6-4 on Centre Court, while Bethanie Mattek-Sands of the United States was forced to quit her second-round Wimbledon singles match against Sorana Cirstea after collapsing on court 17 with a knee injury.

Four Britons, Andy Murray, Johanna Konta, Aljaz Bedene and Heather Watson, are through to the third round and all are in action on Friday.
