Djakadam and Douvan land wins for Mullins

Djakadam repeated last year’s success to claim the John Durkan Memorial Punchestown Chase at Punchestown.

The 4-5 on favourite sat in second-place, with jockey Ruby Walsh happy to let Sub Lieutenant make the running, before sharing the lead with five to jump, and not a lot between the pair.

9-1 shot, Outlander emerged as the main threat to Djakadam as the Mullins trained horse kicked clear, but the market leader’s stamina proved too strong as Walsh finished a length and a quarter clear.

The win will please Walsh, after the 37-year-old chose to ride in Punchestown over travelling to Cork for the Hilly Way Chase to mount superstar Douvan.

Walsh's absence did not have an affect on the 1-6 on favourite who extended his unbeaten over the hurdles to seven with a fine performance in the Kerry Group Hilly Way Chase.

Last season's Arkle Trophy winner headed the field from the start, and after 227 days off, Douvan and jockey Paul Townend never looked in real danger.

With four left to jump, the Irish jockey opened up on the eventual winner, finishing 22 lengths clear of second-placed Days Hotel.
