Doyle posts picture of nasty cut

Photo of deep gash not for faint-hearted

Kevin Doyle posted a picture of the nasty injury he picked up in Republic of Ireland's 1-0 win over Switzerland at the Aviva Stadium - and it's sure to turn a few stomachs.

The forward was stretchered off after just 23 minutes of his first appearance for the Boys in Green since 2014, denying him the chance to impress manager Martin O'Neill sufficiently that he might be included in the squad for Euro 2016 this June.

However, the extent of the wound Doyle posted to his Twitter account showed that the former Wolves and Reading player was lucky to only need stitches after the challenge with a Swiss defender, an incident which looked innocuous at the time.

“Thanks for all the messages, could have been worse, bit of surgery going on now and be back very soon,” Doyle wrote on his official Twitter account.

Ireland won the game courtesy of a second-minute close-range header from Ciaran Clark with his defensive partner Shane Duffy earning the Man-of-the-Match award for a sound defensive display as Switzerland pushed hard for an equaliser.

Next up is a friendly match with Slovenia at the same venue on Tuesday evening.
