Ireland international forward Kevin Doyle has announced his retirement on medical advice.
The 34-year-old has suffered from a series of concussion-related issues and has not played since sustaining a severe head knock playing for Colorado Rapids against LA Galaxy in the MLS on 2 September.
The former Reading and Wolves player scored 14 goals for Ireland in 64 games and was selected for Martin O'Neill's provisional 32-man squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Wales next month.
Doyle was the Football Association of Ireland's young player of the year in 2006 and its senior player of the year in 2009.
The Wexford man said in a statement: “Today I’m sad to announce that after listening to medical advice I will no further part in this season and will be retiring,” Doyle said in a statement.
“This year it has been clear to me that heading the ball was becoming problematic, and causing me to have repeated headaches. Two concussions this season and numerous others over the years have made this more concerning.
“After consulting with experts in the field it has been decided that to avoid the possibility of these symptoms become more serious and permanent, I will be hanging up my boots for good.”
