Dundalk to face Legia Warsaw

Aviva Stadium the venue for home tie

Dundalk have been drawn against Legia Warsaw in the Champions League play-off round.

Stephen Kenny's side are bidding to become the first Irish team to reach the group stages of the Champions League but should they fail to overcome their Polish opponents they will drop into the Europa League group stage.

Legia Warsaw defeated Celtic 6-1 on aggregate two years ago, but we subsequently thrown out of the tournament after it emerged that they used an illegible substitute in the closing stages of the qualifier second-leg tie.

Dundalk will play the home leg of their Champions League play-off at the Aviva Stadium as the 4,500-capacity Oriel Park does not meet UEFA's standards.

Brendan Rodgers’s Celtic face Israeli outfit Hapoel Beer-Sheva, while Manchester City have been drawn to face Steaua Bucharest.

Pep Guardiola has never been involved in this stage of the competition and the City manager admits the tie is the most important fixture of the season as the Blues look to qualify for the group stages.

In the Europa League, West Ham will renew rivalry with Romanian side Astra Giurgiu in the play-off round.

Astra Giurgiu beat the Hammers 4-3 on aggregate in the third qualifying round last season and Slaven Bilic's side will be hoping to exact revenge on the Romanian side.

Should they emerge victorious from the two-legged tie, the Hammers will join Manchester United and Southampton in the group phase.

West Ham will travel to Romania for the first leg on August 18 before welcoming Astra Giurgiu to the Olympic Stadium on August 25.
