Ex-Mayo bosses slam player 'egos'

Ex-Mayo joint managers Noel Connelly and Pat Holmes say the county won't break their All-Ireland curse until the players "check their egos"

The managerial pair quit in October 2015 after just one season in charge following a revolt by senior players after Mayo's All-Ireland SFC semi-final replay defeat to Dublin in 2015.

Mayo haven't won the Sam Maguire since 1951, and September's All-Ireland defeat to Dublin under new manager Stephen Rochford was the Maritime county's 10th All-Ireland final defeat since 1989.

"If a small group within the squad are allowed to dictate the way they tried when we were there, it’s not good for Mayo football," the pair told the Irish Independent in a joint statement.

"If that situation is still there, the likelihood is that they will win nothing. That’s the bottom line as we see it.

"We’re talking about a small number in the panel. The rest are fantastic, and there are fine young players coming along, but the danger is that they will be held to ransom by a few inside and outside the group."
