Roger Federer battled back from two sets down to defeat Marin Cilic and book his place in the Wimbledon semi-final.
Federer faced three match points earlier in the quarter-final but held his nerve each time before finally seeing off the challenge of Cilic 6-7 4-6 6-3 7-6 6-3.
Bidding to reach an 11th semi-final at SW19, Federer struggled to make an impression against Cilic in the opening two sets and at times he looked set to be heading out of the tournament.
However, he dug deep when required to prevent Cilic from closing out the match and in the end he proved once again why he has taken the crown on seven occasions.
It was Federer who looked the sharper of the two as the match got underway on Centre Court, earning two break points in the fifth game, but he was unable to convert either and a tie-break was needed to decide the first set. Cilic stormed 5-0 in front before clinching it without too much difficulty.
Federer dropped his serve early in the second set but had the opportunity to immediately break back but he failed to take advantage of Cilic's double faults and it was the Croatian who went on to take the set.
Cilic had three break points in the seventh game of the third set but Federer managed to save each of them to take the momentum and he carried it through by winning three games on the bounce to take the third set.
The former champion then faced match points in the tenth and 12th games but Cilic found the net on the first before Federer fired an ace to take it to a tie-break. He spurned his first two set points and it could have proved costly as Cilic set up another match point, but Federer prevailed to level the match.
As the final set progressed, Federer grew more confident and having moved 5-3 clear he sealed victory with an ace, much to the delight of those watching on Centre Court.
"A lot happened out there, Marin is such a wonderful player, I was in so much trouble in the third and then again in the fourth," Federer told the BBC.
"It was great playing against Marin, he is one of the nicest guys on the tour so I feel sorry for him but for me the dream continues.
"I couldn't be happier because I fought well and played super great at the end so I'm very, very pleased."
Federer will now face Milos Raonic in the semi-finals after the sixth seed defeated Sam Querrey 6-4 7-5 5-7 6-4.
