Federer through after five-set thriller

Roger Federer is through to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open after seeing off Kei Nishikori 6-7 (4-7) 6-4 6-1 4-6 6-3 in a cracking encounter.

The Swiss legend needed to dig deep to book a scarcely believable 49th grand slam last eight appearance as his opponent threw everything at him.

The 35-year-old is appearing in his first competitive event since Wimbledon in July after surgery on a knee injury left him on the sidelines for six months.

The 17-time Grand Slam champion, who is seeking his fifth Melbourne title, will take on Mischa Zverev in the last eight after the German produced a huge shock to eliminate world number one Andy Murray in four sets.

Venus Williams meanwhile booked her seventh appearance in the last eight at this event after she cruised past Mona Barthel 6-3 7-5 earlier on Sunday.

The 36-year-old set up a meeting with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who beat fellow Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-3 6-3.

Seventh seed Garbine Muguruza swept aside Romania's Sorana Cirstea 6-2 6-3 and will take on the winner of the last-16 tie between world number one and defending champion Angelique Kerber and American Coco Vandeweghe
