Ferrari fail with Vettel penalty appeal

Ferrari have failed to overturn the penalty given to Sebastian Vettel at the Mexico Grand Prix.

The German driver was demoted from fourth to fifth place after being penalised for dangerous driving when tussling with the Red Bull of Daniel Ricciardo.

The Italian team had appealed the ruling by the race stewards as they claimed "new evidence" proved the penalty was incorrect.

However, the appeal was dismissed as the race stewards believed that "no new element" existed in the evidence provided by Ferrari.

The four-time world champion had been sanctioned for performing a dangerous move while braking as Verstappen attempted an overtaking manouevre.

The young Dutch driver was also punished after the race a fortnight ago, demoted from third position with Vettel awarded the placing instead.

However, Vettel has now lost that elevated third place and has in fact been moved down to fifth place after Ferrari failed to prove that the original decision deserved to stand.

Jock Clear, Ferrari's engineering director who was representing Vettel at the hearing on Friday, was forced to concede that the GPS data they provided as new evidence didn't contradict the other evidence stewards used to punish him.
