Fitzgerald in the running for Wexford post

Davy Fitzgerald is in line to make a swift return to inter-county management, according to widespread reports.

Fitzgerald, who stepped down as Clare boss after five years in charge last month, has emerged as the front runner to succeed Liam Dunne as manager of the Wexford senior hurling team.

The Clare man is reported to have met with officials in Portlaoise on Thursday to discuss the vacancy and an official announcement could be made over the weekend.

Dunnes's five-year term came to an end in the summer and, while he was interviewed for the position, it has been suggested that he is not in the running to continue at the helm.

Fitzgerald guided Clare to the All-Ireland title in 2013 and earlier this year the Banner County won the Allianz Hurling League for the first time since 1978.

Conor McGregor will fight Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight belt at UFC 205 in New York on November 12 live on the eir Sport pack. The eir Sport pack is free to all eir broadband customers. To learn more about setting sport free visit www.eir.ie/sport .
