Fitzpatrick 'devastated' by England loss

Ireland women’s rugby captain Paula Fitzpatrick was “devastated” by her side’s 12-10 loss to England in their November Series encounter at UCD this Sunday.

World champions England sneaked the win thanks to Katy McLean’s conversion of flanker Izzy Noel-Smith’s 72nd minute try. England had taken a half-time lead courtesy of Rochelle Clark’s 33rd minute try, with Ireland keeping in touch though a penalty from Nora Stapleton.

A Stapleton try after the interval, which she converted herself, gave Ireland the lead in the tie, before England mustered their late winning score.

“Really devastated to lose, but what a performance from the girls - from 1 to 23, it was outstanding,” said Fitzpatrick. “We really had huge control in parts of that game, and we haven't played together in months.”

England captain Sarah Hunter commented post-match: “It was a really competitive game, it could have gone either way at the end. Happy to get the victory, maybe not so happy about our performance. We've certainly got things to work on.”
