Five rivals for Sizing John

Sizing John will have to overcome five rivals if he is to complete the Cheltenham-Punchestown Gold Cup double on Wednesday.

The seven-year-old began the season by finishing second to Douvan in the Paddy Power Cashcard Chase at Leopardstown's Christmas Festival but stepped up to three miles for the Stan James Irish Gold Cup after his impressive win in the Kinloch Brae Chase.

His victory in the Leopardstown feature convinced connections to go for the blue riband and he did not disappoint as he defeated Minella Rocco in the Cheltenham feature last month.

He will now bid to complete the Cheltenham-Punchestown double but he will face stiff competition from 2015 Cheltenham winner Coneygree.

Mark Bradstock's ten-year-old has managed just two runs since his win at Prestbury Park in March 2015 due to injury but he is on the comeback trail and connections will be confident of a big run from him at the County Kildare venue.

Djakadam was fourth at Cheltenham but he has finished second in this race for the past two seasons and trainer Willie Mullins will be hoping he can go one better this time around.

Lexus Chase winner Outlander takes his chance for Gordon Elliott, while Champagne West, winner of the Thyestes Chase, has stood his ground for Henry de Bromhead.

The small field is completed by the Anthony Curran-trained Flemenstar.
