Foley died of fluid build-up in lungs


Munster head coach Anthony Foley died because of a build-up of fluid in his lungs caused by a heart condition.

The condition, known as acute pulmonary edema, was caused by "a heart rhythm disorder", an autopsy performed by a French coroner has revealed.

Pulmonary edema is a build-up of fluid in the lungs that can lead to respiratory failure.

The 42-year-old died suddenly on Saturday night at the hotel in Paris where Munster were staying prior to Sunday's scheduled Champions Cup game against Racing 92, which was cancelled after the news broke.

The backrow forward played on 62 occasions for Ireland, captaining the team three times. while he had a starring role in his province's long climb to the summit of European rugby, captaining Munster as they finally won the European title in 2006.

His remains will lie in repose at St Flannan’s Church, Killaloe from 1pm to 8:30pm on Thursday evening while the funeral has been scheduled for 12pm on Friday, open to friends and family only.
