Southampton captain Jose Fonte has handed in a transfer request.
Fonte still has 18 months to run on his existing contract and recently took to his Instagram account to reveal that he has been told that he will not be offered a new deal.
The 33-year-old has been linked with Manchester United and Stokes executive director of football Les Reed has told BBC Radio Solent that he has expressed an interest in exploring his options.
“We haven’t had any bids for Jose and I don’t know whether we will or not," Reed said.
"He’s contracted to us, he’s had several opportunities to improve the contract situation. He’s reserved his right not to do that, and made it very clear he would like to explore the opportunities for a transfer.
"That’s where we are at the moment, Jose wants to leave the club. He’s formally asked for a transfer."
Last month Fonte denied reports that he had rejected a new contract but Reed insists the skipper was offered a new deal.
"What was offered to Jose was, in my view, quite significant off the back of the contract he signed in October 2015.
"Six months later we were prepared to improve that contract and extend it. He has turned down the opportunity to increase his salary, and he's turned down the opportunity to get another permanent year on his contract."
