Franklin D put down

Betfred Mile winner Franklin D has been euthanized after sustained a fatal injury on the gallops on Wednesday morning.

Michael Bell's charge fell during a routine workout and was subsequently found to have sustained a fracture to his hind leg.

"Unfortunately, Franklin D broke a hind leg pastern this morning and couldn't be saved. It is very sad for all concerned," Bell told the Racing Post.

"He was a yard favourite and very easy to train. Everybody is very disappointed and upset by this and we were looking forward to him being a pathfinder for us with his trip to South Korea. This really is a game of snakes and ladders."

Franklin D's impressive win in the Betfred Mile formed part of a superb double for owners Bill and Tim Gredley with Big Orange landing the Goodwood Cup the day before.

"It only happens to the good ones," Gredley said.

"There are two uncertainties in life: swimming in the sea where no-one knows you and horseracing."
