French Grand Prix to return in 2018

The French Grand Prix will return to the Formula 1 calendar in 2018 following a ten-year absence.

France hosted the first ever recognised Grand Prix near Le Mans in 1906, but the country has not featured on the schedule since 2008 when Magny-Cours in central France staged the race.

The Circuit Paul Ricard - also known as Le Castellet - will host the race when it returns to the calendar with the event likely to be held at the end of July.

"We and those who are with me are very proud, it's a great victory," said regional politician Christian Estrosi.

Paul Ricard, which is in the south of France near Marseilles, last hosted a grand prix in 1990 but the circuit recently staged a wet-weather test for the 2017 Pirelli tyres.

French driver Romain Grosjean has welcomed the news, tweeting: "Really super happy for French fans who will have their Grand Prix and who can come support us!"
