Sergio Garcia has been named the European Tour Golfer of the Year.
The Spaniard beat off competition from Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood to claim the award after a season in which he finally won his first major title.
The 37-year-old buried years of major disappointment by holding off Rose’s dogged challenge to emerge victorious at the Masters in April, following in the foot-steps of his compatriots Seve Ballesteros and Jose Maria Olazabal to win the green jacket.
Garcia also won titles at the Dubai Desert Classic and in Spain at the Andalucia Valderrama Masters.
"This is an amazing honour,” he said. “I think both on and off the golf course it has been a unique and unbelievable year, and one that I will definitely remember my whole life.
"With five of us filling the top five places in the Race to Dubai, it shows the real strength of the European Tour, and European players in particular, and hopefully we will keep that going for next September [at the Ryder Cup] in Paris."
Rose took the honours at back-to-back tournaments in the autumn and almost made it three victories from three starts before he faded at the season-ending World Tour Championship. Instead, after a season in which he came close to capturing his first major at the US Open, Fleetwood held off Rose’s late charge to clinch the Race to Dubai title.
