Gavin recalls his favourite game as he calls it a day

Brian Gavin has recalled his favourite game as a Nolan Park epic after calling time on his career.

The popular County Offaly whistler refereed four All-Ireland hurling finals but, at 40, feels that the physical demands of the game mean he should call it a day now.

Refereeing hurling at intercounty level, he told eir sport, was getting tougher and tougher with each year – but he has no regrets.

"I really enjoyed my time. My favourite game to have refereed would have to be the All Ireland SHC qualifier between Kilkenny and Tipperary in 2013.

"Both teams were knocked out in their province and met in Nolan Park. There was, quite simply, savage tension and passion.

"And," he added, "seemingly I did a mighty job."

Gavin will now have more time to concentrate on another love – horseracing. He is a regular visitor to Irish meetings.
