Sunderland boss Simon Grayson has told Darron Gibson that his “reputation is in tatters” after his profanity-filled tirade about his Stadium of Light team-mates.
Gibson was filmed by supporters after Sunderland's 5-0 pre-season defeat to Celtic calling the team "s***" and making the accusation that team-mates Lamine Kone, Jeremain Lens and Wahbi Khazri "did not care" about the club.
And, when asked by a Sunderland fan why he was in a pub just hours after Saturday's match, Gibson replied: "I might be off my face in here but I still want to play for Sunderland, the rest of them don’t though."
Former Preston boss Grayson has fined the Ireland international two weeks wages following the incident.
"Darron Gibson has apologised and admitted that he was bang out of order," he said.
"It is not a situation you encourage for any player to be out drinking. An experienced player making a mistake like that is disappointing.
"Ultimately, it's going to cost him a lot of money and his reputation is in tatters to a certain degree."
Sunderland begin their Championship campaign against Derby County at the Stadium of Light on Friday, and Grayson admits the 29-year-old is likely to feature in the Black Cats' squad for the match.
"We're probably not in a position where we move people out of the squad because we don't have the strength in depth," he continued.
