Gilroy confirmed as new Dublin manager

Pat Gilroy has been named as the new manager of the Dublin hurlers on a three-year term.

Gilroy, who led the Dublin footballers to All-Ireland victory in 2011, takes over from Ger Cunningham, who resigned in July following the Dubs' humiliating 6-26 to 1-19 qualifier defeat to Tipperary.

Gilroy, 45, becomes the first native Dubliner to lead the county since Tommy Naughton in 2008, after the Dublin County Board ratified him ahead of Cuala's All-Ireland club championship-winning manager Mattie Kenny.

The St Vincent's man, a former dual player who won Dublin U15 and U16 hurling championship medals under Lar Foley, stepped down as Dublin football manager in 2012 after three years in charge, and the county's first Sam Maguire in 16 years.

"Pat has the respect of everyone in Dublin,"  Dublin GAA chairman Sean Shanley said.

"He brought the footballers to All Ireland glory, hopefully he can do the same with the hurlers."

Gilroy is likely to invite former Galway hurling manager Anthony Cunningham onto his coaching team. Cunningham won two All-Ireland medals as a player in 1987 and 1988, and led his native county to the 2012 and 2015 All-Ireland finals.

"He has ideas about who he wants and from today on he can ask people he wants to come with him now that he is there," Shanley continued.

"I would say he should have them all in about a week or so."

Dublin hurlers are next in action on 19 November at Fenway Park in Boston, taking on Galway, Tipperary and Clare in the AIG Fenway Hurling Classic.
