Given backs Bruce for Villa

Shay Given says Aston Villa should appoint former Birmingham boss Steve Bruce as their new manager.

Former Aston Villa goalkeeper Given believes Bruce is the perfect replacement for Roberto di Matteo, who was sacked by Villa on Monday after just four months in charge at Villa Park.

Given joined Villa from Manchester City in July 2011, becoming Alex McLeish's first signing at Villa Park after the Scot's controversial move from Birmingham.

Villa fans famously launched protests at the appointment of McLeish and daubed graffiti on the walls at Villa Park after his appointment in June 2011, just five days after he quit Birmingham.

Stoke goalkeeper Given, 40, admits that the St Andrew's link could also scupper Bruce's chances.

"I think he’d be a good candidate," Given told Talksport.

"Whether that goes down well with a few Villa supporters having managed Birmingham, I don’t know.

"But Steve has the credentials to go in there and do a very good job.

"He is not working and he has been in this situation before where he has managed to get teams to perform small miracles."

Villa lie 19th in the Championship, ten points off the play-off places, and Given says getting back the club back on track is more important that any Second City rivalry.

"The biggest thing for Villa is to get straight back up. Villa need to get it right sooner than later," he continued.

"The fans deserve better. The international break has come at a good time to get someone in."
