Branden Grace created Major history in playing the first-ever round of 62 on moving day at the Open.
The 29-year-old South African marked a 62 to move to eight-under-par at Royal Birkdale, completing the feat with a three-foot par on the 18th .
“It was a special day to be quite honest,” Grace said. “I had no idea today was the lowest, at all. I was just so in the zone and playing so well that I was just trying to finish the round without a bogey.
“Sometimes it helps not knowing these things.”
A 63 has been shot 13 times in Major history, Vijah Singh and Greg Norman both managing it twice, with Justin Thomas the most recent last month at the US Open.
The previously elusive 62 was almost achieved by Jack Nicklaus in the 1980 US Open when he missed a three footer on the 18th hole in the first round. Tiger Woods had the opportunity in the second round of the 2007 PGA Championship, however, his 16-foot putt on the final hole lipped out of the cup. Phil Mickelson also went close in the opening round of the Open in 2016, lipping out on the 18th.
