Grosjean "good and fine" after Sepang crash

Haas driver Romain Grojean says he is "trying to smile" about his high-speed crash during second practice at the Malaysia Grand Prix.

The Frenchman catapulted into the barriers at Turn 13 of the Sepang International Circuit, after suffering a puncture to his rear right tyre when his wheel clipped a loose drain cover.

The 31-year-old was able to walk away from the crash unscathed, but the race organisers called a halt to FP2 13 minutes early to begin investigations into the incident.

"I didn't see anything and then suddenly I had a big hit on the right rear," Grosjean said.

"Let's just hope [tomorrow] the drain stays in place!

"I'm trying to smile about it.

"I'm good. I'm fine. That's the most important thing.

"We're going to repair the car and I'm sure the circuit is going to sort things out."

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel set the fastest time in second practice at the Malaysian GP, with championship leader Lewis Hamilton well off the pace in both FP 1 and FP 2.

But the German expects the championship leader to bounce back in FP3 and in qualifying on Saturday.

Both Ferrari drivers crashed out at the first turn at the Singapore GP on 17 September, allowing Hamilton to secure a 28-point lead at the top of the drivers' championship with six races of the season to go.

However, when asked if Mercedes' struggles on Friday offered the Scuderia a chance to put the pressure on the Briton, Vettel said: "If that's the case, then yes, but it's Friday afternoon, so things can change. We'll see what tomorrow brings."

The Malaysia Grand Prix at the Sepang International Circuit will be shown live over the weekend of 29 September-1 October on eir Sport in Ireland. The race is live on eir Sport 1 on Sunday, 1 October [race time 8am]
